Critical Chain Success Tip - How to reduce Bad Multi tasking
In a multi project environment with a high number of projects, resources are usually shared across the portfolio. Inevitably, resources find themselves forced to work on many tasks at once resulting in ineffective working. Tasks are picked up, put down, re visited and forgotten (bad multi-tasking) as priorities change which causes more and more tasks to be lengthened and delayed.
How do control the level of live tasks without reducing the number of projects completed?
A company should put a mechanism in place to reduce the number of projects that are live (stop the launch of or freeze projects) to ensure that the work load on the resources is around 75% of the current load then maintain release of new projects at a rate to sustain this level.
Experience over many Critical Chain implementations has shown that doing this will reduce the levels of bad multi-tasking significantly, ensure that all resources still have sufficient work to prevent wasted capacity and has demonstrated a significant increase the rate of completion.
