Executive Summary

Dr Eli Goldratt opened the seminar by putting the current economic situation into perspective, and thereby set the stage for an interesting seminar.

Over 130 senior executives from across Europe heard Dr Eli Goldratt discuss how the adverse effects of the current economic difficulties can be diluted or even eradicated via some common sense led changes. Dr Goldratt introduced a number of steps that will securely and quickly grow profitability.

Throughout the seminar, Dr Goldratt explained how service to the market can be significantly improved whilst simultaneously reducing the working capital employed within the business, within a matter of weeks.

Dr Goldratt stressed the importance of communication and synchronisation in an organisation and subsequently introduced the Strategy and Tactics tree, which for all levels of management captures the synchronised answers to the following questions:

1. What am I responsible for accomplishing?
2. Why is what I’m responsible for really needed by the organization to improve vis-à-vis its goal?
3. What must I do to accomplish it?
4. Why will this action/activity achieve it?
5. Why is accomplishing this at risk without providing another level of detail for my subordinates?

In a fascinating test with the audience, it was enlightening to see that none of the executives present felt they could communicate clear answers to all these questions in a few focused sentences.

Have a go at this yourself! Ask you managers to do it in your next meeting! You may be surprised at the lack of effectiveness of the synchronisation across departments and the lack of communication between the levels within departments.
